From where I was seated
I could clearly make out the white tassel hanging loosely from the belt loop of the old man’s trousers - and knew, as I slowly raised my head, that at the very top what I would see was none other than the circular shape of the notorious kippah

It rained all day while I toiled through 12 hours of uninspiring work.  Lately, it’s never anything worth talking about, let alone doing. Tall guy told me to “walk up the fucking stairs” before shoulder checking me with his hand bag. His handbag. Somedays I meet a stranger’s eye across the train and I’m pretty sure they can see The Fire Burning In The Chest. #hard...

Mr. Big Man sitting across from me. Your voice fills up the station as do your opinions - which are poor by the way. While your companion speaks to you softly - your responses to him are loud and obnoxious. Shutup.

People when they move away from you are so predictable. They’re all fearless about making change and changing you. From this moment to the next. One day you’se here. Next day, you’se not.

A state of confusion would exist right below Colombia if it were on a map. Just an inconclusive mass of land floating upon the Atlantic….and the Pacific. Similar to most South American countries, with it’s extreme contrasts in climate and altitude, breathing easily would be a feeling you’d learn to re-appreciate.

Bento or bust
Something about sushi has been turning my stomach lately.  I’ll gloat over the menu for over an hour until I choose the perfect salmon tuna roe avocado combo. When it arrives I get it all set up.  Soy sauce, ginger curls, smears of wasabi all around.  I do the tweeze, dunk, shake, stop, stare. Chew, chew, chew, chew swallow. Repeat the process two more times. Raise chopsticks for a...

Cheese, man
Sunday afternoon. 4 beers deep into it, the food arrives. Eating with him is like having lunch with a doppelgänger. What are you too good for?  He asks as I pick through my food. I don’t know, I shrug. This restaurant. This neighborhood. This mozzarella stick. Why? Because it peels away in layers but still leaves me wanting more…

Shocking footage reveals tuna industry's slaughter... →
bringtheruckuss: New video footage captured by a tuna industry whistleblower has been released by Greenpeace, which reveals the routine slaughter of other marine species, including whale sharks, rays and whales. The footage is shot onboard a tuna fishing vessel in thePacific which deploys fish aggregating devices, one of the most aggressive fishing operations used by the industry in the face of...

Occupied
“If you didn’t see your broker in the welfare line something is very wrong!” came echoing down the subway tunnel this evening. On the way home I passed Emanuel Ungaro and brushed by a gaggle of suits on their way uptown. They smelled like expensive cologne and 100% cashmere. If you’re not part of the solution, are you part of the problem? #i don’t know #cantstop...

themattsmith: “Artisan”?  NOT PRONOUNCED “ARTESIAN” Nothing screams “Mainstream co-opting the semi-fringe” than hearing my local sports talk radio DJ talking about the “artesian bree-ash” buns that a bar’s burgers are served on.

9am, Wednesday
In my stomach I’ve got hunger pangs and butterflies It’s early enough that the unemployed are still waking up but I currently don’t have that problem so…… And even though it’s a messy city I’ve decided it’s still manageable. One other thing, I make sure everything I put online is 100% permanent so that you’ll be able to reference these...

Lately
evenings rush to bring the weary some familiarity. Especially when the seasons start to change. There are shoes lined up in the middle of the platform with anxious people attached to them. No one really pays attention when the doors slide open and a jittery man of no more than 5 feet staggers in with his eyes half closed . He slams a fist into the window with determinable force but alas...

Currently listening to In the City by Chromatics The chorus is repetitive and melancholic with heavy synth and goes something like: shining violence in the cittyyyyyyyyyyy concrete eyes in the cittyyyyyyyyy faceless driver, drive away in the citttyyyyyy Anyway. Its Friday and Ana says dont worry, beauty is only skin deep. Well we’ll have to see about that…. #in the cityyyyyyyy

When....
….I chat with my maternal grandmother (which isn’t very often anymore) it feels like church.  We can go over 2 months without speaking and the more time goes by - the guiltier I feel for not reaching out.  So. When we do finally speak - for those 10 or 20 minutes - she always begins the conversation by asking me - in Kriolu - how I’m living. I tell her more or less the same and...
